CHARACTER
Name: Gyro Zeppeli, with his birth name being Julius Caesar Zeppeli.
Canon: Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run
Age: 24
Timeline: After the conclusion of the third stage of the Steel Ball Run.
Items with character at canon point: Two steel balls--weapons that utilize the Spin, talked about in the Abilities section--one really awful hat, the tacky clothes on his body, one beat-up teddy bear, and one eyeball belonging to the corpse of Jesus Christ. Probably Jesus, I mean. He thinks it’s Jesus. They all think it’s Jesus. Might as well be Jesus.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A!
Personality: From a young age, Gyro Zeppeli was conditioned into an atmosphere of repression and restriction, which led to him being wholly submissive to his father, the royal executioner and someone who was not against being cruel to his son. This led to Gyro becoming extremely good at handling unpleasant situations with grace and tact, as his career as an executioner necessitated it. He was good at getting the job done, but not out of a sense of justice: he sees it as a mercy to be able to kill people in the most efficient and painless way possible. He believes that even criminals deserve the small kindness of an instant death, despite any crimes they may have committed. Even though his profession would suggest otherwise, Gyro is a very caring individual.
This trait is best represented by his outrage at a young child being slated for execution for a crime the boy had nothing to do with. He has a strong sense of justice, appropriate for his position, but he is also able to recognize when something is morally wrong, indicating a personality separate to the man his father raised him to be. While extremely loyal to his country, he is very attuned with his own sense of self, and will do what he believes is right in any situation. This, however, causes him to seem “holier-than-thou”, so to speak, as Johnny Joestar points out. He dislikes when things get personal to himself, but at his current canonpoint, he is beginning to redefine what it means to race as Gyro Zeppeli.
Gyro presents conflicting facets of himself: to the casual stranger, he is a powerful, aloof man with mysterious powers he refuses to discuss, leading to an almost reverent attitude surrounding the way people speak about him. Enemies fear him--and rightfully so, as he is a capable fighter and a cutthroat opponent, as depicted in his first appearance where he causes a man to shoot himself via the Spin. He appears collected and calm to everyone he meets, and has a very good reputation amongst his fellow executioners, though he is noted as being a bit soft and sympathetic towards prisoners, even when sympathy entails showing them basic human decency.
As the story continues, however, the reader gets to see Gyro from the viewpoint of Johnny Joestar as the two of them ride alone together, and it is a vastly different impression. He constantly tells jokes of varying quality and general obnoxiousness, and often at inopportune times. He is often crude, as seen when he suddenly brings up Stephen Steel’s sex life with little context given. Added to his appearance, his demeanor in personal situations seems less like a grown man and more like a teenager leaving home for the first time, though he does exhibit moments of serious clarity, as when he gives Johnny his real name and promises to keep his secret in return.
Again, his largest fault is his tendency to stray towards the impersonal: it was required of him for his job as an executioner, and it shows in his unwillingness to talk about his past in the beginning of the part. Overall, though, he is remarkably caring and shows empathy towards Johnny. Even in his seeming crudeness, he’s very smart and knows when things ought to be serious, and is able to buckle down as a situation requires. While he struggles with identity, he does have a strong grasp on his ideals and what he believes is right and wrong, and will do what he can to uphold that same justice.
Background: Here is his wiki page, and here is the entry about Steel Ball Run!
Abilities: Gyro has quite a few natural abilities, but most prominent is his equestrian talent, which enabled him to win the first stage of the Steel Ball Run. He has been riding horses for a very long time, and it shows in his affinity for and proficiency with the animals. In addition to this, he has a very thorough understanding of human anatomy, thanks to his background as an executioner and nurse.
Supernaturally, however, is a completely different story: Gyro is incredibly proficient in the ancient art of the Spin, a combat technique that allows him to manipulate physics in a specific way that allows him to incapacitate people in an efficient and clean manner using his Steel Balls. The technique involves careful observation of the environment to find “Golden Rectangles” and throw along that pattern in order to achieve a perfect Spin. It isn’t an ability inherent to him, however: anyone can learn the art; he just happens to be particularly gifted at it. Here is the wiki article about it! Gyro uses the Steel Balls with the Spin, but not the Wrecking Balls.
Gyro also possesses the eye of the Holy Corpse, granting him Scan: a special kind of vision that allows him to easily detect other parts of the Corpse, as well as generally improving his vision and allowing him to perform a more perfect form of the Spin.

Prose Log Sample:
Gyro let his arms hang loose at his sides, close to his precious Steel Balls, squinting his eyes against the setting sun. They’d have to set up camp soon, particularly if they wanted a fire: they were almost out of food, and it worried him, but not as much as it worried Johnny. The desert wasn’t forgiving, especially at night, especially in their situation, but Gyro felt confident that he could handle just about anything that God or the President or whoever decided to throw at them, whether it be new attackers or that damn Diego Brando again. He rarely ever got scared, not the way Johnny did, and so it was easy for him to stay still for this moment, looking into the orange sky.
Valkyrie lingered by his left shoulder, waiting for him to move again. Yes, they’d have to make a fire soon, but they’d have to be careful about it: they had few matches left, and were far from any town where they could buy more. Mentally, Gyro prepared a brand-new joke: no wonder cavemen rubbed sticks together to create fire, because they were too far from the nearest general market…no, that wasn’t funny. His jokes rarely were, but he tried anyways, just to have something to alleviate the constant blanket of anxiety that had taken to filling the silence. Jokes, stories, songs--anything to distract from the miasma.
Delicately, he sighed, reaching up a gloved hand to stroke Valkyrie’s neck. They had a long way to go, but it was going to be worth it. He had to believe that much.
